February Mock Draft

This mock was done Feb. 21, Enjoy!

ROUND 1

1. Carolina Panthers: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

Remember, this is the first pick of the draft. No team can afford to take a guy with character issues (Nick Fairley) or a possible one-hit-wonder (Da'Quan Bowers). There is little question that Marcell Dareus will be a force. This is the perfect pick to build around.

2. Denver Broncos: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

Denver needs to upgrade its defensive line. They'll get Dumervil back next year which will help, but John Fox knows the importance of a dominant DT. I know I just said there are character issues with Fairley, but this is the right system for him.

3. Buffalo Bills: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

The Bills need to get out of the NFL cellar. I was impressed by Fitzpatrick last year, so I don't think they need to reach for a QB here. Peterson is extremely gifted and will help the Bills turn their defense around.

4. Cincinnati Bengals: Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
I could definitely see AJ Green going here instead of Bowers, but the Bengals could use a more consistent pass rush. I know the draft is full of quality DEs, but there will be some excellent options at WR in the 2nd round.

5. Arizona Cardinals: Von Miller, DE/OLB, Texas A&M

This guy is pure talent. The Cardinals need a dynamic player on defense that the rest of the team can rally around. I expect big things for Miller in AZ.

6. Cleveland Browns: AJ Green, WR, Georgia
If Green falls here, Cleveland fans should rejoice! Taking AJ Green is here is sort of like taking Braylon Edwards, except Green will actually hold onto the ball. Colt McCoy will flourish with Green as his primary target.

7. San Francisco 49ers: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

Gabbert is the best QB option in this draft. Harbaugh is the perfect coach to take him. This is an ideal situation for the 49ers who desperately need a franchise QB.

8. Tennessee Titans: Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina
DE is not the Titans biggest need. However, they have a new coach in town and I have a feeling they will take on the 'take the best player available strategy'. Quinn is a beast and will absolutely leap your screen.

9. Dallas Cowboys: JJ Watt, DE, Wisconsin
It's time for Igor Olshansky to move on and be under productive somewhere else. JJ Watt will be exactly what the Cowboys need up front.

10. Washington Redskins: Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri
I expect Smith to jump up the boards come early April. Orakpo was the only Redskin to record more than 2.5 sacks last year. The rush OLB position needs a consistent player like Aldon Smith.

11. Houston Texans: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska

The Texans cannot continue having a poor secondary and expect to win games with offense alone. Amukamara is the best available CB and will be a welcome upgrade.

12. Minnesota Vikings: Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

The Vikings need a QB, but they will be able to address that need in the 2nd round. Nate Solder is an amazing talent that should not be passed up.

13. Detroit Lions: Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA
Ayers is projected as a 1st rounder in most mock drafts, but I still feel that he is under rated. Ayers will seamlessly fill in for Julian Peterson.

14. St. Louis Rams: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama

No surprise here. Julio Jones fits perfectly with what the Rams are doing.

15. Miami Dolphins: Mike Pouncey, G, Florida

I have a feeling that the Dolphins will acquire a veteran QB like McNabb to fill that need. Mark Ingram is a popular pick here, but I feel the Phins will find a RB in round 3 or 4 that will make up for losing Ricky and/or Ronnie. Pouncey is the best G in the draft. Miami's offense will be instantly better.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Cam Jordan, DE, California
The Jaguars are lucky to have Jordan fall this far. In fact, I think I may have to switch Quinn and Jordan around for my next update. The Jags finally have a 1st round DE that is worth the pick.

17. New England Patriots: Tyron Smith, OT, USC

The Patriots primary need is to bolster their pass rush. However, they (once again) have a ton of draft picks and this draft is particularly deep at the rush OLB/DE position. I have Smith graded as the 2nd best OT and he's definitely worth the pick.

18. San Diego Chargers: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

Teams will become more and more impressed with Carimi as we get closer to the draft. Carimi will upgrade the Chargers right tackle position instantly.

19. New York Giants: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
Why would a team as effective at running the ball take a RB in the 1st round? If the Giants could have ran out the clock late in games, they would have made the playoffs. Ingram will get tough yards that Bradshaw can't and Jacobs won't.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue
Kerrigan will be more effective as a hand on the ground pass rusher than a stand up rush OLB. There is no secret that the Bucs need a pass rusher and Kerrigan fits perfectly.

21. Kansas City Chiefs: Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State

The only reason Paea is mocked out of the first round is because of a knee injury. Teams should not worry about it, he's fine. Plus, he's an absolute beast.

22. Indianapolis Colts: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College

How could you not be impressed with this kid? Peyton Manning is back to lighting up the league with this addition at OT.

23. Philadelphia Eagles: Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
The Eagles may choose to take a CB like Jimmy Smith here, but I doubt they do. There are plenty of 2nd round CBs that will service nicely. Sherrod is the next best OT and they are going fast.

24. New Orleans Saints: Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple
The Saints get a big upgrade in the defensive line. He will make the entire line better and more apt at getting to the QB.

25. Seattle Seahawks: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

Before you judge this pick, really think about it. Cam Newton is the most gifted athlete at QB. He just needs a year or two to become more refined. Hasselbeck still has something left in the tank and will help mentor Newton as a passer. Furthermore, the Seahawks will need to hit the reset button pretty soon. Newton will be the new face of the organization.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado

Smith is a physical corner who fits the Ravens perfectly. If the draft were today, I seriously doubt the Ravens pass on Smith if he's available.

27. Atlanta Falcons: Titus Young, WR, Boise State

This guy has gamebreaker written all over him. Matt Ryan gets another weapon that will alleviate some of the double coverage on White.

28. New England Patriots: Justin Houston, DE/OLB, Georgia

As I mentioned earlier, the Pats will look to upgrade their pass rush. Houston fits the NE scheme very well. There is no reason to pass on him here.

29. Chicago Bears: Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor

The Bears fill a need by upgrading at the DT position. Taylor is a space-eater that will enable the likes of Julius Peppers to do what he does best.

30. New York Jets: Bruce Carter, OLB, North Carolina
Justin Houston is who the Jets want, but he's gone. Bruce Carter is definitely under rated. You may think Carter is not first round talent, but I'm here to tell you that you're wrong.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Ben Ijalana, OL, Villanova

Ijalana fits what Pittsburgh needs. The Steelers would rather have had some of the other O-Linemen that were taken earlier, but that's what you get for winning the AFC. Ijalana is no slouch though, he will add consistency to line that begs for improvement.

32. Green Bay Packers: Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
Austin fits that 3-4 DE mold that the Packers run. Cameron Heyward has shown flashes and could go here, but I have Marvin Austin graded above him. Jenkins and Jolly may not be there, so the Pack get a good one in Austin.

ROUND 2

33. New England Patriots: Cameron Heyward, DE/DT, Ohio State

34. Buffalo Bills: Corey Luiget, DT, Illinois

35. Cincinnati Bengals: Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland

36. Denver Broncos: Rahim Moore, FS, UCLA

37. Cleveland Browns: Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa

38. Arizona Cardinals: Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame

39. Tennessee Titans: Brandon Harris, CB, Miami

40. Dallas Cowboys: Aaron Williams, CB, Texas

41. Washington Redskins: Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas

42. Houston Texans: Jabaal Sheard, DE/OLB, Pittsburgh

43. Minnesota Vikings: Jake Locker, QB, Washington

44. Detriot Lions: Stefen Wisniewski, C/G, Penn State

45. San Francisco 49ers: Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh

46. Denver Broncos: Mikel Leshoure, RB, Illinois

47. St. Louis Rams: Christian Ballard, DE/DT, Iowa

48. Oakland Raiders: Kendric Burney, CB, North Carolina

49. Jacksonville Jaguars: Colin Kaepernick, QB, Nevada

50. San Diego Chargers: Martez Wilson, ILB, Illinois

51. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia

52. New York Giants: Drake Nevis, DT, LSU

53. Indianapolis Colts: Quinton Carter, S, Oklahoma

54. Philadelphia Eagles: Brandon Burton, CB, Utah

55. Kansas City Chiefs: Sam Acho, DE/OLB, Texas

56. New Orleans Saints: Ryan Williams, RB, Virginia Tech

57. Seattle Seahawks: Rodney Hudson, G, Florida State

58. Baltimore Ravens: Randall Cobb, WR, Kentucky

59. Atlanta Falcons: Brooks Reed, DE/OLB, Arizona

60. New England Patriots: Daniel Thomas, RB, Kansas State

61. San Diego Chargers: Jeremy Beal, DE/OLB, Oklahoma

62. Chicago Bears: Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami

63. Pittsburgh Steelers: Rashad Carmichael, CB, Virginia Tech

64. Green Bay Packers: Marcus Cannon, G, TCU
